Fettercairn is a distinctive village with an attractive square and striking Gothic arch set below the hills of both Aberdeenshire and the Angus Glens. Fettercairn, from the Scottish Gaelic meaning “slope by a thicket”, is an ancient place that was granted free burgh status in 1504. The Church of St Martin’s is worth a visit, and you could take in a tour of Fettercairn Distillery. The stately home of Fasque House, dating from 1809 and home of the Gladstone family (including statesman W.E. Gladstone) is just outside the village. Fettercairn is probably not too well known outside of the local area but as location for cycling it's a hidden gem - at the foot of the formidable Cairn o'Mount and as gateway to the Angus Glens.
